An American Requiem in Carnegie Hall

An American Requiem to Receive World Premiere at Carnegie Hall

On May 29, 2027, Raphael will conduct the world premiere of his newly orchestrated An American Requiem at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Produced by MidAmerica Productions, the performance will feature the New England Symphonic Ensemble, bringing this monumental work to one of the world's most celebrated concert stages.

Raphael began composing An American Requiem in 2016 in response to the tragic mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub that claimed the lives of dozens of innocent people. As communities across the United States grappled with an escalating wave of gun violence, many choral organizations turned to the great Requiems of Mozart, Fauré, and Verdi to honor the victims and offer comfort. While deeply inspired by these timeless masterpieces, Raphael envisioned a distinctly American response: a large-scale Requiem in English that could speak directly to audiences of all backgrounds.

Scored for soloists, choir, and orchestra, An American Requiem sets the traditional Requiem text in English while embracing a richly diverse musical language. Conceived as a musical melting pot, the work draws on Gospel, Romanticism, popular music, serialism, and Renaissance counterpoint, creating an expressive and accessible score that seeks to inspire hope in the face of tragedy.

The work has evolved over the past decade through several important performances. Excerpts were first premiered in 2017 at the historic Convent Avenue Baptist Church in Harlem under the direction of Gregory Hopkins. Following a substantial revision in 2021, selections from the work were presented in a virtual choir performance commemorating the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic. The complete work received its live premiere in April 2022 at Herz Jesu Kirche in Graz, Austria, performed by students of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.

An American Requiem is dedicated to all victims of senseless acts of violence. Through remembrance, compassion, and the shared experience of music, the work offers a message of hope, healing, and peace.

In recognition of its artistic achievement, An American Requiem was awarded Second Prize in The American Prize for Music (2023).
